TORONTO – The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is investigating a Canadian Pacific freight train that derailed 22 cars around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning in the northern Ontario town of White River.
According to CP Rail spokesman Ed Greenberg, two of the 128 cars leaked about four barrels worth of sweet crude oil. The leak has been contained and “all necessary clean-up procedures are being carried out.”
“We have experts on scene as part of our response protocols, and that would include environment officials to ensure even with just four barrels, that any environmental remediation is thoroughly carried out,” Greenberg told Global News.
He said this includes “scooping up any impacted soil or snow” and disposing it into the appropriate landfills.
White River is located just over 300 kilometres north of Sault Ste. Marie.
