SASKATOON – A 19-year-old woman has been charged after the death of a new-born child in 2010 led to a search of Saskatoon’s landfill.

In late October 2010, police received several reports about the birth of a baby and events that followed.

The woman, who was 17 at the time, told investigators that she had given birth at home to a baby girl sometime during the Thanksgiving weekend.

The dead baby was then put in a garbage bin which was collected and taken to the dump.

That led to a search of the landfill by investigators, Forensic Anthropologist Dr. Ernie Walker and two cadaver dog teams from Calgary Police Services.

The search through 2,100 metric tons of garbage over the size of a football field was called off after seven days with no success in locating the dead child.

No charges were laid at the time.

Now, following a more recent investigation and in consultation with the crown prosecutor’s office, the woman has been charged with neglect to obtain assistance in child birth and concealing the body of a child.

She has been served with a summons and is scheduled to make her first court appearance on May 1.
