RCMP investigating suspicious death in Lake Loon, N.S.

RCMP are investigating a sudden death on Cherry Brook Road in Lake Loon, N.S., a community outside Dartmouth.

Police say the body of a 22-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was found just after 8 p.m. on Thursday. RCMP are not saying if the man was found outside on the road or inside a nearby home.

“Those are details of the investigation that we really can’t get into at this point,” said Cpl. Jennifer Clarke.

The cause of the man’s death has not yet been released, but police say it is considered suspicious.

“At this stage of the investigation, we’re calling it a suspicious death. That may change and when it does, we will certainly have an update,” said Clarke.

Marcell Slawter was driving down the street when he noticed police activity on Thursday night.

“I grew up here. I moved away 15, 20 years ago. I was just down visiting my mom, I pulled up last night, as I pulled up there was cop cars everywhere, lights flashing,” he said.

Slawter says he knows the father of the 22-year-old man who died.

“Obviously the family is very distraught, showing a lot of emotion. Very tragic. This is a very quiet community as you can tell and stuff like this doesn’t happen here so it’s very shocking to everybody,” he said.

“Regardless of what happens to anybody, what they’re doing, anything like that. Any loss of life is tragic.”

It’s anticipated more information will be released once an autopsy is completed on Friday.

The Integrated Criminal Investigation Division is leading the investigation.  The unit consists of investigators from the Halifax District RCMP and Halifax Regional Police.

The RCMP Forensic Identification Section and Medical Examiners Office are also assisting with the investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact RCMP, Halifax Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.

“If people in the community have any concerns, we would encourage them to call police. If they see any suspicious activity, things like that, we would encourage them to contact us,” said Clarke.
