A Winnipeg car chase that resulted in street closures throughout the city and a cyclist being sent to hospital ended in a tense nine hour standoff Saturday evening.

A 33 year-old man facing drug and firearm related-charges and a 22 year-old man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant led police on a pursuit through Winnipeg that concluded with one of the men barricaded in a family home.

The incident started Saturday morning when the men tried to flee in a truck from police after being located near a Sherbrook Street home. A high-speed pursuit ensued, resulting in a female cyclist and a taxicab both being hit by the driver near the Arlington Street Bridge.

“He kept going [when he hit the woman],” said Constable Jay Murray. “Did not care.”

The cyclist was transported to hospital and released with minor injuries.

The dramatic car chase ended when the truck was abandoned near Winnipeg’s Magnus Avenue and the two suspects fled into a family home.

Children were inside at the time of the break-in.

According to police, the homeowner was known “very distantly” by the 33 year-old suspect.

“It’s my understanding that the homeowner had met two of the suspects only twice in his life,” Cst. Murray said. “He was connected through the friend of a family member.”

“It’s very alarming…You can only imagine how traumatizing this must be for the children.”

The 22 year-old suspect, who was wanted Canada-wide for violating parole, attempted to escape the home out of the back door and was arrested on scene.

“The tactical support team used a number of methods to try and [get the suspect out of the home],” Cst. Murray said. “This individual refused to cooperate with police.”

Around 9 p.m. Saturday, the Tactical Support Team was able to enter the home and take the suspect into custody.

Everyone in the home was able to escape safely and no further injuries were reported.

Both men are now facing multiple charges.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Both of the incidents resulted in major road closures in Winnipeg Saturday. Large sections of both Arlington Street and Magnus Avenue were shut for a portion of the afternoon.
