Winnipeg Blue Bombers GM ready for training camp to kick off

WINNIPEG — Of the four training camps Kyle Walters has been in charge, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers general manager finds this year’s to be the most promising.

“I think there’s less holes to be honest with you,” Walters said. “We’re more solid across the board. I know our Canadian talent is deeper.”

The team begins preparing for the season Wednesday when rookies report. Prospects will have three practices to make an impression before the veterans arrive on Sunday.

“This will be their first professional training camp so it will be good to see the way they handle it,” Walters said.

Among the positions the Bombers will look to fill is that of Khalil Bass. His off-season departure created an opening at middle linebacker. Walters expects the battle for it to be the most intriguing this year.

“That’s one we’ll be keeping an eye on,” Walters said. “When there’s a job to be won, it generally creates a lot more open competition.”

Walters has yet to win a playoff game as general manager of the Bombers. He feels the team is making strides towards that goal and is heading into the season like every other – hoping to win the Grey Cup.

“We’re not scare to say that’s our objective,” Walters said. “Us like eight other teams are starting camp tomorrow with the believe we’re going to win the Grey Cup or else why would you do it.”

The Bombers play their first pre-season game in Saskatchewan on June 10.
