Global reporter John Sexsmith grateful for Movember support, ‘kind words, well wishes’

*EDITOR’S NOTE: In April 2012, Global Edmonton sports reporter John Sexsmith was diagnosed with prostate cancer. On Nov. 1, 2016, to mark the start of Movember, he opened up about his four-year fight with cancer for the first time. He talked about his Stage 4 diagnosis, explained what treatments he’s been undergoing and what impact the disease has had on his life and his family.

John has also been writing incredibly candid blog posts about his experience.

It’s Dec. 15. Two weeks after our highly successful Movember campaign and about time I said a few words to wrap things up. And thanks.

First, Global DOMONation raised over $27,000.00! It was the top total in Alberta and among the best in the land. Twenty-seven grand!!!

My favourite hockey player (son Joel) wears Number 27 so that’s a really cool coincidence!

Life is truly beautiful. It can provide two great gifts: Love and time. After this endeavour, I still feel like I have a lot more of both.

We also believe we have helped increase awareness concerning men’s health issues, particularly prostate cancer. Coincidentally, the Edmonton Prostate Cancer Peer Support Group had its largest number of attendees this year, during a monthly meeting on Tuesday.

Thanks again for all of the kind words, well wishes and treatment suggestions. Medical marijuana was a hot therapeutic topic. (Already gave it a whirl. During my University daze. Ha-ha.)

Today is also my 55th birthday. Fifty-five! OMG! (Which is short for: Old Media Guy.) I must confess, I’m a little tired, but not retired. I still plan on returning to the Global roster sometime in the New Year.
