First-degree murder charge laid in Red Earth First Nation death

Carrot River RCMP has charged a man with murder after a man died at a home on the Red Earth First Nation in northern Saskatchewan.

Police were initially called to a home on the First Nation early Saturday morning for a report of a stabbing.

Responding officers found an injured man at the home. He was taken to Nipawin Hospital for treatment and later released.

While officers were investigating the stabbing, police were called to a second home on the First Nation where an unresponsive man was found.

Efforts to save the man were unsuccessful and Ramsay Whitehead, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death has not been released.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place Monday in Saskatoon.

Police said a man was located near both homes and arrested without incident.

Davis Demery Lester Whitehead, 24, has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault.

He is scheduled to appear Tuesday morning in Melfort provincial court.

Red Earth First Nation is approximately 290 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
