An Alberta woman’s desperate prayers for the return of her child’s ashes have been answered.

Laura Hudson’s baby, Hunter, drowned six months ago. For comfort, the Medicine Hat mother would carry his ashes in her purse when she went on trips.

“At first I carried him all the time, every single day until someone mentioned back in the summer, ‘are you afraid of your purse being stolen?’” Hudson told Global News Wednesday, explaining she only took his ashes on trips since then. “I get sad…when you’re used to breastfeeding a child every single moment of the day and all of a sudden you get the call that he’s gone, it’s hard to separate yourself.

“And even though he’s gone and those ashes are just his earthly body, it’s just the fact he’s with me still in some sort of sense, even though I know he’s in heaven. I’m so excited to get his ashes back but I wish it was him for real, you know?”

Hudson was on a trip to Calgary on the weekend, attending a ceremony at the Alberta Children’s Hospital to help grieving parents when her purse was stolen.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

On Friday night, Hudson and her husband Nathan went to Henry’s Pub, located at 26 Street and 32 Avenue N.E. in the Sheraton Cavalier’s lobby, where the family was staying.

In surveillance video provided by the Sheraton, two women are seen entering the bar while the Hudsons were using VLT machines. One woman can then be seen looking around and grabbing something off the bar before the two women took off.

Hudson said she was thankful for all of the support she received on social media and the amount of times the story was shared.

“I was so sad and I got the call and I was just …speechless. I really didn’t think I would actually get him back,” she said.

“I’m so thankful to have him back and be able to bring him back home and put him where he belongs with his family.”

Calgary police confirmed Wednesday they had located the ashes and said the investigation is ongoing.
