A winter storm that moved in early Tuesday morning has resulted in many closed roads and stranded drivers. In preparation of sold out hotels, the town of Virden is opening their recreation centre for people to stay the night.

“A number of people will be in a position where there are no hotel rooms available to them,” Virden Mayor Jeff McConnell said over the phone. “Ensuring that people have a warm place to stay and an opportunity to be looked after.”
Some bedding is already available and anyone in need can go to the recreation centre as of early Tuesday afternoon. Food will also be provided.

According to McConnell’s twitter account, musician Tom Jackson will be hosting an impromptu concert for anyone who can make it and those who are stranded.
