Sask. government urges safety in 2016 Cold Weather Strategy

The Saskatchewan government wants people to call for help if they see someone suffering in the cold weather during the winter months.

Officials recommend calling the Ministry of Social Services, community groups or 911 if someone needs shelter.

“Community and government organizations are working together again this year to make sure everyone has a safe and warm place to sleep,” Social Services Minister Tina Beaudry-Mellor said in a news release.

Members of the Saskatoon Cold Weather Strategy group communicate daily when wind chill or temperatures fall below -30 C.

Regina’s Cold Weather Strategy took effect Nov. 1 and Prince Albert’s began Oct. 17.

“There are supports available in communities across Saskatchewan for individuals who are in need of shelter, and it is important that people know how to access these supports,” Salvation Army Maj. Mike Hoeft said in the release.

In Regina, Mobile Crisis Services is open 24/7 to give referrals and other services. They can be reached at 306-757-0127.

The Saskatoon branch of the Salvation Army is also open 24/7, providing emergency services and referrals. Their number is 306-244-6280.

Prince Albert Mobile Crisis can be reached after hours at 306-764-1011. YWCA after-hours emergency services are available for men and women at Our House on 15th Street and can be called at 306-922-6162.
