The memorial held in Vancouver on Saturday for senior Hells Angel member Robert Green attracted a record number of mourners from the notorious organization — as well as a large presence of police keeping an eye on the proceedings.

Hundreds of motorcycles made their way from Coquitlam to join friends and family in mourning Green, who was found murdered in Langley Oct. 16. Jason Wallace, 27, a member of the 856 gang, was arrested the next day and charged with second-degree murder.

The gathering on Saturday was one of the largest ever to take place in B.C. for the Hells Angels, as members from other provinces also came to pay their respects. Green was described in his obituary as a “loving father of six,” known for his generosity and humour.

The heavy police presence was due to the increasing wave of gang-related violence that has swept through the Lower Mainland in recent weeks. Police said their focus was on public safety.

On Wednesday, the dismembered body of 27-year-old Shaun Alan Clary was found by a rural Langley road.

Although investigators have not linked Clary’s murder to Green’s, police say Clary did have gang connections.
