Fire Chief Don Enns said he was worried about having to evacuate nearby buildings but the blaze was under control before that was necessary.

Enns said the building was abandoned and vacant at the time of the fire.

Traffic was diverted away from Alfred Avenue as well as Burrows Avenue during rush hour.

The cost of the damage and the cause of the fire are unknown.
