Tuesday was a big day for a little dog in Airdrie, Alta. It’s also a day his owner will never forget.

Dorothy Stewart finally has her old pal Wiser back, five months after he was apparently stolen outside a supermarket.

“A friend of mine took him for a walk and went in to buy some groceries,” Stewart said. “Not even five minutes – came out and he was gone.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Wiser had never wandered off anywhere before, so Stewart figured someone must have taken off with him.

“I never gave up hope, but it was five months. And when I got that phone call Monday, I just started shaking.”

Wiser had been found about 30 kilometres away, on the loose in the town of Carstairs.

He was still wearing his collar and ID tag, so reuniting him with Stewart happened quickly.

“He came right up to me and gave me big hugs,” she said. “It was awesome.”

Wiser appears to be in good health and Stewart figures whoever had him must have been caring for him.

But she does want to catch up on his grooming and plans to take Wiser in soon for a much-needed haircut.
