A family is devastated following a fatal crash early Sunday morning.
A 19-year-old was killed and his mother is fighting for her life in hospital.
Police said an SUV slammed into a car on Metis Trail and Country Hills Boulevard N.E. just after 12:30 a.m.
The front seat passenger of the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and rear seat passengers were seriously injured.
The father and teenage daughter were also in the car and were rushed to hospital in serious condition.
A man in his 20s, who was in the SUV, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Charges are pending against the 28-year-old woman who was driving the SUV. She was accompanied by two passengers. Police believe excessive speed and alcohol are to blame.
“A white Kia Forte was eastbound on Country Hills Boulevard approaching the intersection of Metis Trail,” Acting Sgt. Trevor Cairns said. “The light subsequently turned green and they proceeded through the green light and they were struck by a Dodge Journey going northbound on Metis Trail.”
