North Dartmouth remembers young homicide victim

A young man from Dartmouth had his life tragically cut short 17 years ago and Wednesday night his memory was honoured.

Jason MacCullough was walking through a Pinecrest Drive park on August 28, 1999, when he was shot and killed. The case remains unsolved.

“Jason was a member at the Boys and Girls Club and after his passing members of the community, members of his family, came together with us and decided to honour his passing and try to put a stop to the violence within the community,” said Alana Doucette, program director at the North Dartmouth club.

Halifax Regional Police (HRP) are still urging people with any information to come forward.

“We’re confident there’s people in the community that have information that would certainly forward our efforts and potentially bring those people responsible to justice,” said Don Moser, an inspector with HRP’s East Division.

A walk against violence has been held in his honour every year since his death. Halifax Regional Police walk in solidarity alongside community members of all ages, including 9-year-old Carlylenn Colley who lives in the neighborhood.

“It’s actually kind of sad how violence impacts people because then it grows and grows and when it grows it’s just going to spread,” she said.

Over 100 people marched toward the park where MacCullough was killed to have a moment of silence.

The park has been named in memory of Jason in hopes that his memory will be carried on by the community.
