The Emmys were more political this year, with many winners using their speeches to highlight specific causes or stratified groups of people. Jill Soloway, a veteran TV writer who took home the Best Director, Comedy for her work on Transparent, finished her speech with “Topple the patriarchy!”

Jeffrey Tambor, star of Transparent and the winner of the Best Actor, Comedy award, stood up for transgender rights and said he wouldn’t be angry if he were the last cis-male actor to play a trans woman.

“I would not be unhappy if I were the last cis male to play a female transgender on television. We have work to do,” he said.
