Police issued a release Friday afternoon to say the death of a 35-year-old man found seriously injured outside a west Edmonton convenience store was no longer being considered suspicious.

At around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, police officers were called to the 7-Eleven store on Stony Plain Road and 154 Street, in the Canora neighbourhood, after a passerby noticed the injured man.

Police had said they believed he was attacked in the store parking lot and homicide detectives were called in to investigate. The man was taken to the University of Alberta Hospital where he died later Wednesday.

An autopsy completed Friday revealed the man died of natural cases.

On Wednesday, police said 7-Eleven employees knew a man was laying outside.

“The staff inside the store has been interviewed and they didn’t see anything other than the fact that they were aware that there was an individual laying in front of the store.

“But sadly this neighbourhood, it’s not uncommon in the middle of the night for people to find themselves laying in and around the 7-Eleven. So it wasn’t that out of the ordinary.

The area around the store does experience crime, with several assaults, robberies, thefts, and break and enters in the past 30 days alone.

The area was taped off for several hours Wednesday and forensic crews were called in to investigate.
