Several students, friends and family have also taken to social media to mourn his loss, with many calling him “one of the best teachers” the school has ever had.

Slobodian, 45, was a teacher at Collège St. Norbert Collegiate for over 20 years, principal Chris Szun said in a letter sent home with students.

“His passing will be a very difficult and emotional ordeal for staff and students,” Szun said in the letter.

Police said Slobodian was travelling west on the Perimeter Highway, near St. Anne’s Road just after 8 a.m., when the truck which was also heading west came to a stop at a red light.

When the light turned green the truck turned right at St. Anne’s Road and hit him.

On Thursday police sent out a media release and said charges are being considered against the driver of the truck. However, the investigation is still ongoing, police said.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call (204) 986-6271.
