Penticton’s former Bel Air Motel is breathing new life as an affordable housing complex.
The provincial and federal governments are shelling out $3.2 million to buy and renovate the former motel.
The 42-unit complex is already housing some low income residents, and according to MLA Dan Ashton, will continue to do so during renovations.
The complex is scheduled to officially open late this fall, and will be renamed Fairhaven.
Ashton said the suites will rent for $475 a month, about $200 less than what rental rates cost before the motel closed.
While the governments will own the property, B.C. housing will be in charge of day-to-day operations and management.
Ashton could not say what the annual operating costs will be or who will foot the bill.
He also could not confirm details regarding the screening process to decide who is given the opportunity to rent the units.
The province and federal government recently launched a similar initiative in Kelowna.
