Lethbridge-based lawyer named Chair of University of Lethbridge Board of Governors

University of Lethbridge alumnus and local lawyer Kurt Schlachter is the new chair of the university’s Board of Governors, just the 10th in the school’s history.

Schlachter, who received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Lethbridge in 2000 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Saskatchewan in 2003, is currently the regional managing partner of Stringam LLP law firm.

Noted for his philanthropy in the community and commitment to the university, Schlachter says he is humbled and honoured to have been appointed chair.

“I am looking forward to working with my board colleagues to ensure the continued growth of the University of Lethbridge – an institution that is so vitally important to the people of our city, region and province,” said Schlachter.

“I am excited to learn more of the world class research, scholarship and creative activity supported by faculty, staff and students at the U of L.”

Schlachter has served on several boards including the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta, the Downtown Lethbridge Business Revitalization Zone, and the Canadian Diabetes Association, just to name a few.

Schlachter has also held roles with the school in the past, including serving on the University of Lethbridge Senate.

He is no stranger to recognition either; Schlachter was named one of Lethbridge’s “Top 40 under 40” by the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce in December of 2015.

Advanced Education Minister Marlin Schmidt says Schlachter’s wealth of experience and accomplishments will be extremely instrumental for the school.

“Kurt has a strong background in advancement and philanthropic activities, showing he will be a great asset in this new role with the University of Lethbridge,” said Schmidt.

“He is a highly accomplished, talented individual and we look forward to his leadership of the board.”

University of Lethbridge president and vice-chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon believes Schlachter represents the key values of a University of Lethbridge alumni, and has reflected that in his contributions to the community.

“Kurt’s success as a lawyer and businessman, coupled with his experience on many boards will make him a strong asset to our university,” said Mahon.

“Kurt reflects the qualities we see in so many of our alumni – talented, experienced, and committed to their communities.”

Schlachter is a fourth generation Albertan, and a second-generation alumnus. His mother Juanita Schlachter was one of the first graduates of the University of Lethbridge.

He will be succeeding former board chair Gordon Jong.
