Toronto police are seeking the public’s help identifying a witness in relation to the stabbing death of 20-year-old Kiowa Wind McComb at a North York bar earlier this year.
Police say McComb died in hospital after being stabbed around 2 a.m. on Feb. 9 at Gucci’s Bar and Grill following a confrontation with another man. McComb’s 23-year-old brother also suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident.
Investigators say a suspect and another person fled in a taxi. The suspect was apprehended when police stopped the cab, but the other passenger got away.
Andre Appleton, 35, of Toronto, was charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.
Homicide Detective Shawn Mahoney said Thursday a material witness who was captured on security video prior to the stabbing is being sought for “background information.”
McComb was an Indigenous Youth Intern at the Royal Ontario Museum and was described as an “exceptionally promising young man.”
“Kiowa will be remembered as an emerging arts leader who inspired all those he met with his quiet determination and commitment to better his life, and the lives of others through education,” the ROM wrote on its website.
The ROM has also established the Kiowa Wind McComb Internship in his honour.
