New Brunswick police force hands out ‘positive tickets’ to residents

Times are few and far between when someone goes home and brags about getting a ticket from the police.

But that’s what’s been happening in the Kennebecasis Valley, just outside Saint John, New Brunswick, where police have been handing out unique rewards to people for doing the right thing.

The Positive Ticket Campaign recognizes the things that residents are doing do right in every day life.

“Things like crossing at a cross walk, or pulling over and using your cell phone on the side of the road rather than trying to text while driving,” said Kennebecasis Regional Police Communications Officer Krystal Daley.

Janet Waddell was spotted properly crossing a crosswalk and was rewarded with a positive ticket of a free meal from Pita Pit.

Waddell says crossing in the crosswalk is just common sense, “well because you might get hit.”

“I’ve almost gotten hit three or four times.”

Following the rules of the road is also an import safety issue, the Kennebecasis police say, which is what lead them to hand out the tickets.

“If you jaywalk and happen to step out in front of a car, that car has to stop abruptly for you,” Daley said.

“The person behind them might not be so lucky and that ends up leading to a motor vehicle accident.”

Waddell says rules are there for a reason, and that pedestrians and drivers alike should follow them “otherwise you’ll get stopped by police and get a bad ticket.”
