Scam warning issued in Sask. over someone claiming to be from the U.S. government

Saskatchewan’s Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) has issued a warning about another financial scam in the province.

According to the agency, someone is contacting people in the province claiming to represent the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), which is an agency of the American government.

The person is contacting people by telephone and email. They say they need personal and financial information to aid FinCEN in their investigate of companies related to the sale of securities.

A FinCEN official said the agency does not send unsolicited requests nor does it seek personal or financial information from the public.

FinCEN only deals exclusively with financial institutions and does not directly investigate frauds.

Anyone who has been contacted by someone claiming to be from FinCEN by telephone or the email address stopfraud@fincen.info is asked to contact the FCAA at 306-787-5936.
