Calgary police have laid charges in a violent domestic incident in the city’s northeast on Tuesday that left a mother dead and her teenage daughter in hospital.
Officers were called to the 6900 block of Rundlehorn Drive N.E. at around 12:15 a.m. for reports of gunfire.
When they arrived, police found the victim, a woman in her 30s, dead inside a home.
Her 15-year-old daughter was suffering from what police said appeared to be a gunshot wound. The teen was rushed to hospital where she remains in non-life-threatening condition.
A short time later, officers in a police cruiser spotted a suspect, the victim’s husband, in a vehicle in the 4000 block of Whitehorn Drive N.E.
According to police, the suspect fired at least one shot from his vehicle before pulling over.
“It was actually up in the air, so it wasn’t at officers,” Duty Inspector Joel Matthews said at a Tuesday news conference. “It wasn’t directed at anything.”

Police were able to take the suspect into custody without incident and recovered a firearm at the scene.
Two children belonging to the couple, an 11-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy, were discovered inside the man’s vehicle. Both were uninjured and taken into police custody.
Although police said they hadn’t been called to the home along Rundlehorn Drive before for any domestic-related incidents, they did confirm the suspect was known to them.
On Wednesday, police announced Hien Tuan Lam of Calgary, 43, was charged with first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
Lam is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
On Tuesday, the Calgary Domestic Violence Collective (CDVC) released a statement in response to the incident, saying there are numerous agencies in Calgary available 24 hours a day that provide support.
