A young mother of twin one-year-olds finished the full marathon distance event faster than all other females competing in the Scotiabank Fredericton marathon.

Maura Wieczorek was ecstatic after her win and said it came at the perfect time.

“It’s pretty exciting, it’s been about four-and-a-half years since I’ve done a marathon and quite a few years since I’ve done any distance race so coming through first is quite exciting for me,” said Wieczorek. “And pretty special on mothers day,” she said.

Maura and husband Greg, who finished fifth overall in the full marathon, say they have their hands tied with their two children Clara and Elle but still make time for the sport they love.

“We have a pretty good schedule. I get up and I’m on the roads by 5:30 to do my run,” he explains. “And Maura she fits her runs in, she runs about 120 to 125 km a week.”

After all the rigorous training and the race the two say they’re looking forward to a little rest from running, although they don’t expect a break from their other duties.

“Changing diapers, looking after babies,” says Maura Wieczorek of what they’ll do to celebrate. “We may lounge in the pool at the hotel.”
