Youth shot in drive-by shooting in Vernon

VERNON — Residents in a Vernon neighbourhood say they had a rude and scary awakening early Sunday morning after a drive-by shooting on 33 Street.

It’s believed the door of a home in the 1600 block was shot at, leaving shattered glass on the front porch of the residence.

There is also police tape up blocking access to the backyard of the home.

Police are providing few details about the incident but in a news release, Sgt. Mike Moyer confirmed RCMP responded to a report of shots fired in the area at 12:24 a.m.

“One male youth received a non-life threatening injury. Investigators believe this was a targeted incident, and the matter remains under investigation,” said Sgt. Moyer.

B.C. Ambulance Service confirms it responded to an incident at 1601 33rd Street at 12:24 a.m., adding one patient was transported to hospital.

A neighbour told Global News she was asleep on her living room couch when, around midnight, she heard loud sounds outside of her home.

The neighbour says a short time later, the entire block was taped off and there was a heavy police presence, adding that RCMP remained on the scene overnight.

Longtime area resident Ian Pilsworth says he was woken up by police who wanted to ask him some questions about what he may have seen.

He says the incident has left him feeling worried.

“It’s upsetting,” says Pilsworth. “I didn’t really get back to sleep after. How do you get back to sleep at 3 a.m. when you’ve just been told there’s a shooting?”
