CALGARY – Almost a week after a gorilla at the Calgary Zoo gave birth to her first baby, staff there said the infant isn’t growing as fast as other gorillas born at the zoo.

The zoo said the baby is nursing, however, and that mom Kioja is doing well as a caretaker.

Dad Kakinga, meanwhile, is being very protective.

He has fathered nine other offsprings since 1993; seven are still alive.

The TransAlta Rainforest building has remained closed to the public since the birth to give mom and baby privacy during the early bonding stage.

Keepers are evaluating the situation each day to determine when zoo visitors will be allowed in to get a glimpse of the new addition.
