Footage distributed by the “Labour Union of Agents, Employees and Contractors of the Prison System of Pernambuco State” showed prisoners attempting to escape from the Frei Damiao de Bozzano jail in Recife on 23 January.

The CCTV video filmed by a member of the union off a computer screen, shows dozens of prisoners climbing over a fence as they tried to escape.

Moments later many of them can be seen running back into the prison after police allegedly fired at them from the street in attempt to stop the inmates escaping.

Local media said authorities reported that 40 men escaped, but 36 have been re-captured in the recent days.

Two men died during the prison break and police are still looking for the other two fugitives.

An investigation was underway into the explosion.
