Toronto police identify victim in fatal shooting near Ellesmere and McCowan

TORONTO — Police have identified the victim of a fatal shooting in the city’s east end on Sunday and are appealing to the public for more information.

Police responded to a shooting in the area of Ellesmere and McCowan roads around 4:30 a.m after a hair salon hosted a private party.

A 28-year-old man was shot inside the party and was rushed to hospital where he was later pronounced dead. There was no word on suspects.

Police identified the man as Adedotun Agunbiade, 28, of Toronto, on Monday — the sixth homicide victim of 2016.

An autopsy was completed and the cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound.

The Homicide Squad is continuing to interview witnesses and obtain information.

Police said a man with the same name and age had been charged with assault causing bodily harm and robbery in connection with an incident on Dec. 17, 2014.

He allegedly tried to grab a transfer from a TTC driver at Yonge Street and Queens Quay when the employee placed his hand over the transfers, the TTC said in a statement in September of 2015.

The man then allegedly punched the operator in the head and face and kicked him when he fell to the floor, before stealing his wallet and cell phone.

The TTC said he was sentenced to time served, plus an additional six months for each offence totalling 15 months, and fined $400.

He was also placed on probation for two years, and ordered to stay off TTC property and away from the victim.
