Manitoba lake to be named in honour of fallen RCMP officer

The province is naming a lake near Flin Flon, Manitoba after RCMP Constable Dennis Strongquill who died in the line of duty.

“Cst. Strongquill dedicated his life to protecting the people of Manitoba and making our communities safer,” Assistant Commissioner Kevin Brosseau with the RCMP said in a news release. “The naming of Lake Strongquill is a humbling honour and will ensure that his sacrifice is never forgotten.”

Strongquill, a 20-year veteran was shot and killed on December 21, 2001 during a routine traffic stop near Russell, Manitoba.

The lake lies approximately 45 kilometres north of Flin Flon and has now been renamed Lake Strongquill.

“All Manitobans remember the tragic loss of Cst. Strongquill and it is truly our honour to permanently create a place that will recognize his life and ultimate sacrifice,” Minister Nevakshonoff said in a news release Monday.

The province has also honoured others in the same way, such as hockey star Jonathan Toews, the Queen’s six grandchildren and Manitoba residents who have helped in community development.
