WINNIPEG — Winnipeggers have been wondering when the city will see an outdoor hockey game.

According to hockey insiders on Sportsnet, it could happen this December.

“It is believed the league and the city are working on next year, before Christmas,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on Friday.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Winnipeg’s Heritage Classic was initially slated to happen this season, but scheduling conflicts with the Grey Cup delayed it further. On New Year’s Day in Foxboro, Massachusetts, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman admitted it was about time Winnipeg hosted the game.
“We do owe Winnipeg a game, and we would’ve been there last year but the Grey Cup and some complications,” Bettman said.
Renovations at Investors Group Field started immediately after the Grey Cup. The anticipated date which is before Christmas, would be earlier than the traditional New Year’s Day Winter Classic.

An official announcement from the NHL is expected to be made in the coming months.
