Busiest week of the year for Canada Post in Edmonton

EDMONTON – Canada Post is ramping up for a busy season in Edmonton.

This week is expected to be the Crown corporation’s busiest week of the year, with Christmas less than 10 days away.

On Wednesday, the company will process the largest amount of mail: 1,500 parcels per minute for 23 hours a day.

The company said one hour a day is needed to reset equipment in the plant.

On Monday, Canada Post delivered 3,400 parcels a minute – the highest number of parcels in a single day and the company’s busiest day of the day.

The company expects to surpass last year’s parcel volumes by 20 per cent, an increase the company attributes to more consumers turning to online shopping.

Canada Post has brought in extra trucks, planes and employees to help it process and distribute letter mail, parcels and packets in time for Christmas Day. It is also delivering on weekends.

Green said the post office normally processes between 50 and 80 parcels. On Tuesday, it processed more than 200 parcels.

“That’s a lot for us in this small office. We’ve had extra staff on, coming to help, trying to get everything out and done in a timely fashion so everybody gets their holidays delivered properly and promptly,” he said.
