EDMONTON – The holiday season is an opportunity for most to relax and enjoy time with family and friends, but for FedEx it’s anything but relaxing.
The company is in the middle of its busiest time of year. It anticipates it will deliver deliver 317 million packages around the world between Black Friday and Christmas.
“It’s our busiest time of the year. It’s our Stanley Cup of the year,” Kevin Ackroyd, FedEx country manager, said.
The FedEx building at the Edmonton International Airport was a busy place Wednesday morning.

At 7 a.m., one of the company’s 650 planes landed with about 100,000 lbs of cargo ready to be distributed to the Edmonton area.
“What we’re going to see today is that the jet will arrive. The containers and the packages will come off,” Ackroyd explained.
“Then what will happen is we’ll go inside and you’re going to see the packages being sorted, scanned at every twist and turn, and then you’re going to see the packages loaded on to a truck later this morning and then out for delivery.”
Fed Ex has that size of shipment arrive at the EIA twice a day.

The growing popularity of online shopping has had a major impact on FedEx. The company is delivering a growing number of packages purchased online.
“E-commerce is so, so easy for shopping, and with FedEx we’re there to help you out with logistics chain and right to final destination and drop off,” Ackroyd said.
The number of Canadians using online shipping has grown this year to 55 per cent, according to FedEx.
