Wartime Christmas cards give Calgarians glimpse of courage, hope during tough times

CALGARY – A new Christmas exhibit has visitors to Calgary’s Military Museums reflecting on service and sacrifice during the holiday season.

Called “Merry Christmas From The Front”, the exhibit features cards that soldiers sent home to friends and family in Calgary.

Among the items on display are Christmas cards sent during the First World War, the Second World War and the Korean War.

Archivist Jason Nisenson put the exhibit together, saying he felt the time was right “to collapse that distance between the historical moment and the now, to make you realize this really happened.”

The display definitely hits home for museum visitor Melanie Bond, who said: “I have a son, and I think it would’ve been absolutely horrible to have him away and in danger at Christmastime.”

Bond said the soldiers’ cards show optimism, despite being amidst the horrors of war.

“That idea of hope,” she said, “that even though they’re far away, they’re still connected together through spirit.”

The exhibit runs through New Year’s Day at the Military Museums in southwest Calgary.
