New Brunswick Senator John Wallace resigns from Conservative caucus

New Brunswick Senator John Wallace has resigned from the Conservative caucus and will sit as an independent.

According to a statement from his office, the resignation is due to “irreconcilable differences” between himself and other Conservative senators, in particular Conservative Senate leader Claude Carignan, regarding the roles, responsibilities and independence of Conservative senators.

The statement specifically mentions the extent of political partisanship in senators’ roles in providing sober second thought.

Wallace intends to remain in the Senate, sitting as an independent. He was named by former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper and took office in 2009. A former lawyer, he also served on several boards and community organizations in Saint John before assuming office.
