11 cattle killed at Nobleford roundabout after semi hauler flips

LETHBRIDGE – A cattle hauler carrying 100 cattle flipped over Tuesday night at the Highway 23 and Highway 519 roundabout, near the village of Nobleford.

The driver was not injured. However, 10 cattle were killed on impact when the hauler crashed, and one had to be put down on scene.

According to Picture Butte RCMP, it was just after 4 p.m. when the semi attempted to go around the traffic circle and then shifted weight, which tipped the truck over.

“It is an unfortunate crash that we have with this vehicle,” said Sgt. Tom Howell. “We have to establish why when it shifted weight it tipped over.”

Both the Nobleford Fire Department and Fort Macleod Fire Department were on scene, along with the rescue unit for livestock, trying to free cattle from the hauler. They spent up to five hours clearing the scene.

A veterinarian was on standby in case any cattle had to be euthanized.

Eighty-nine cattle were rescued with no serious injuries. Police continue to investigate scene, but do not believe speed, drugs or alcohol were involved.
