WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Jets inched closer to their 23-man roster as they made a pair of moves on Monday.

The Jets re-assigned forward J.C. Lipon to the Manitoba Moose, and placed defenseman Jay Harrison on waivers.

Lipon, 22, appeared in four pre-season games with the Jets and recorded one goal and one assist. Last season Lipon played in 75 games with the Jets top affiliate in St. John’s and tallied five goals and 21 assists over 75 games.

“He made huge strides,” Jets head coach Paul Maurice said. “He has a real good sense of how to stir the pot. Not everybody does. He’s not gonna be particularly well liked by anyone but his teammates, but that’s a gift.”

Harrison, 32, was acquired in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes last season. He dressed for 35 games with the Jets and scored two goals with three assists. If Harrison goes unclaimed on waivers, the Jets would assign him to the Moose and save money against the salary cap.

Not an easy decision for Maurice who’s relationship with Harrison dates back to their days together in the Hurricanes organization.

“It’s a tough day today,” Maurice said. “It’s tough if it’s any player that you’ve coached, but when you have the relationship that we have and the time we spent together.  Those are tough ones.”

The moves leave the Jets with 24 players remaining, meaning they still have to make one more cut before the start of the regular season. Thomas Raffl is still on a tryout contract and would have to sign an NHL contract to remain with the team.
