First year enrollment up 15 percent at UBC Okanagan

KELOWNA —  There are a lot more freshman faces at the UBC Okanagan (UBCO) campus this year, with 1,777 first year students enrolled at the university, a 15 per cent jump from last year.

Official numbers don’t come out until November, but preliminary stats show just over 8,600 students in total are enrolled at UBCO, coming close to beating the school’s all-time attendance numbers.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Every time you see a new class of students you have hope,” says UBC interim president, Dr. Martha Piper. “You know that there’s a new generation, another set of students who are excited young, intelligent, brave and forward thinking. It’s very exciting.”

If she were to do it all over again and go back to university, Dr. Piper says she’d have this advice for her 18-year-old self:

“Take advantage of the incredible opportunities. So often we go through life and don’t take full advantage of whatever is in front of us and this is truly an exceptional opportunity for students.”
