Cherryville hunters asked to help track tuberculosis

File / Global News

CHERRYVILLE — The provincial government is seeking the help of hunters in the Cherryville area to find out if a contagious disease has infected wildlife.

In 2011, seven cases of bovine tuberculosis were discovered in local livestock. The government has been monitoring the situation since then and no new cases have been reported.

Scientists are able to examine the presence of tuberculosis by looking at glands in the animals’ head or lungs. The province says this is why obtaining hunter samples are so critical to the study.

Hunters are encouraged to drop off the heads of their harvested deer, elk or moose at the following locations:

  • Frank’s General Store (1139 Highway 6, Lumby)
  • RT Ranch Sausage and Custom Cutting (39 Byers Road, Cherryville)
  • Province’s District Office (102 Industrial Place, Penticton)

People living near Lumby can also contact Susan Latimer at 250-547-9207 to make drop-off arrangements.
