CALGARY – Police identified 27-year-old Calgarian David Quach as the victim of a shooting in the city’s northeast on Saturday night. The case is the city’s sixteenth homicide of 2015.

Police arrested a 20-year-old man in relation to the case late Tuesday night, and said his name will be released once he is formally charged.

Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit couldn’t comment on whether the victim was known to police.

“We do have a person of interest, however, because of the ongoing nature of this investigation, I can’t provide any information at this time,” said Andrus in an afternoon press conference.

Police were called to the 7000 block of California Blvd N.E. for a report of a man found injured on a driveway at around 9 p.m. Saturday. A witness said he noticed the victim lying beside a parked vehicle on the driveway. The witness said the victim stood up, got into the vehicle and reversed it onto the road, hitting the witness’ vehicle. Police said the victim then got out of the vehicle and fell to the ground. An autopsy determined Quach died as a result of being shot.

Andrus said the victim isn’t related to the home where he was shot. He said police believe Quach was shot “just prior” to the arrival of the witness while he was still in his vehicle. He said it was not considered a drive-by shooting.

Quach was transported to hospital but later died of his injuries.

Police continue to investigate, and do not believe the incident is random.

“We’re concerned any time we have a violent incident in the community, especially when it puts members of the public at risk,” said Andrus. “In this case, it happened mid-evening. There was obviously traffic in the area and the potential for a passerby or resident to be injured was great.”
