HALIFAX – A home under renovation in Halifax’s south end partially collapsed late Monday afternoon and injured a construction worker who was trapped by the debris.
Workers were pouring concrete on the addition to a house on Lucknow Street, when the roof caved in at around 4 p.m.
When emergency crews arrived, they found a worker injured on the roof who could not get down safely.
“When crews arrived, they got confirmation there was still one person on the roof of the portion of the building that was still standing,” said Division Chief Lloyd Currie with Halifax Regional Fire.
Currie said the man’s injuries were not severe and he was conscious, however, he could not get down from the roof safely.
A rescue team put the man in a basket and lowered him down to the street with an aerial apparatus.
At that point, he was checked by EHS paramedics and transported to hospital by ambulance.
“He was conscious and breathing and talking to the paramedics when he got down,” Currie said.
An engineer was expected on the site Monday evening to assess the scene.
“We’ve turned the scene over to the Department of Labour, who will probably be working in conjunction with the police department to try and ascertain what happened,” he said.
