Police release identity of man killed in northeast shooting

CALGARY – Police have released the identity of a man killed in a northeast shooting over the weekend.

Officers were called to the 5300 block of Rundlehorn Drive N.E. around 3:45 a.m. on Saturday for reports of shots fired.

When they arrived, investigators discovered a vehicle with two people inside, both of whom had been shot.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene – while the other was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

On Tuesday, police confirmed 20-year-old Steven Sharda of Calgary died as a result of gunshot wounds.

Police haven’t been able to interview the second victim, who remained in hospital with critical injuries as of Tuesday afternoon.

This incident is not thought to be random.

“We believe it was a targeted attack; that the people responsible knew the victim,” said Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus during a Tuesday news conference. “We are in the process of collaborating witness evidence and reviewing CCT video to identify suspects.”

Andrus said police are also trying to determine a motive. Results of a forensic examination of the vehicle were not released.
