Water polo kicks off Pan Am Games competition ahead of Opening Ceremony

TORONTO – Early competition at the Pan Am Games got underway Tuesday, three days before the opening ceremonies.

The men’s and women’s water polo teams are set to face off in preliminary group matches at the Atos Markham Pan Am/Parapan Am Centre in Markham, Ont.

The women’s teams take to the pool Tuesday at 8 a.m. with Venezuela vs. Puerto Rico.

Canada will face Brazil in the third match, scheduled for noon.

The men’s teams will follow, with Canada taking on Brazil at 6 p.m.

The U.S. men’s team is a four-time defending Pan Am Games champion, while the women look to defend their 2011 Pan Am Games title.

Canada’s men are hoping to end an Olympic drought, seeking the team’s first berth in eight years.

Canada’s women are looking for revenge against rival Americans after a gold medal loss in 2011, costing Canada a qualification spot at the 2012 London Games.
