Man charged with sexually assaulting three young girls in Lethbridge

WATCH: A Halifax man has been charged in connection to a historical sexual assault in Lethbridge. Kimberly Tams reports.

LETHBRIDGE – RCMP have arrested a Halifax man accused of sexually assaulting three young girls in Lethbridge over ten years ago.

The assaults allegedly occurred in the summer of 2004, when the accused was living with one of the victims – a nine-year-old girl – and her family.

It’s alleged the accused also sexually assaulted the girl’s two friends, one of whom was nine-years-old and another who was 11-years-old.

Police were contacted about the accusations in May of 2005, after the man had moved out.

A warrant was issued for his arrest, but police were unable to locate him.

The case went cold until April 2015, when members of the Crimes Unit were tasked with following up.

RCMP say investigators pursued a number of avenues, including searches of various databases in each province, and the accused was subsequently located in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

He was arrested and transported back to Lethbridge to answer to his charges, with assistance from the Halifax Police Service.

Michael Charles Chute, 56, is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching.
