MONCTON – Thousands of Moncton residents who attended the RCMP Musical Ride Thursday evening said their experience helped bring closure to the police shootings from last year.
Angie Dunnett attended the event with her family.
“We’ll never forget but it’s part of closure for us at the same time and it’s something we’re going to have to live with for the rest of our lives,” she said, noting her in-laws were some of the people caught in the lock-down zone while police searched for Justin Bourque.
“It was a pretty scary time for us,” she said. “They kept calling us to let us know what was going on and we kept in the loop to make sure they were okay.”
Bourque surrendered to police 30 hours after killing three RCMP officers and wounding two others.
Dunnett said events like the Musical Ride help people heal together.
“It’s good that Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe and all around the world — they really pulled through for us,” she said.
The show featured 32 riders and horses performing intricate figures and cavalry drills.
Others attending the event said it was more than entertainment. Jim Wade said it shows Moncton’s strength as a community.
