Plateau merchants close their doors to protest tough parking rules

WATCH ABOVE: Some merchants on Laurier Street are fed up with what they feel are restrictive parking rules. In an effort to send a message to the borough’s administration some shop owners closed their doors Saturday afternoon.

MONTREAL – Merchants on Laurier Street in the Plateau Mont-Royal borough have had enough.

They say that new parking regulations on the street are hurting business and also making life difficult for residents.

Unless you have a parking vignette, parking is next to impossible according to shop owners.

In their latest protest, merchants on Laurier between Papineau and Brebuf streets decided to close shop for one hour on the busiest shopping day of the week — Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m.

The idea behind the protest was to show, what the street would be like if the shops were to close down permanently.

In a Facebook post, an association of Plateau merchants and residents urged the public to attend the next borough council meeting on Monday, to ensure that their voices are heard on issues that matter to them.
