Canadians have been known to pay it forward. It’s not uncommon for people in the drive-thru at a local Tim Horton’s to buy a coffee for the person behind them.

And now, a social media campaign is hoping to dedicate those good deeds to a Norwood, Ontario man who died in February.

James Bidgood died during a snowmobile accident in February when he collided with a car on County Road 45, north of Cobourg. Jason Alexander, a friend of Bidgood’s told a reporter for MyKawartha.com that he would frequently buy coffee for the people behind him in line.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

He said he came up with the idea after telling Bidgood’s story to a Tim Hortons employee in his cab. She started to cry and the next time he tried to buy a coffee, she refused his money.

“She recognized me at the window. I looked at my cup and (she had written) ‘For James’ with a heart on it,” Alexander told MyKawartha.com.

Now Alexander wants people to pay it forward and buy “one for James” the next time they’re in line for coffee.

He created a Facebook page and explained in a post that all people have to do is give the employee at the drive-thru window some money and say its “One For James” – a euphemism for paying it forward.

The idea has caught on, gaining traction across Canada. There’s been dozens of posts on the Facebook page with people from across Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia saying they will be buying “one for James.”
