HALIFAX – Twelve hours after several 911 calls from a man requesting help in the south end of Halifax, police and searchers have ended their search with no sign of the caller.
The operation was called off at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Dispatch received six calls from an unregistered cell phone at around 3 a.m.
Four of the calls were silent, but in two of the calls, the man said he was in the area of Tower Road and was injured.
Sgt. K.D. McKinnon said duty officers reviewed the calls and decided they were convincing enough to follow up. There was no indication what type of injury the man had and his exact location was unclear.
“It was one of those things where we err on the side of caution,” McKinnon said.
Officers and the K9 unit searched the area but could not locate the man.
By daylight, Halifax Ground Search and Rescue had joined the investigation and were travelling door to door from University Avenue South to Point Pleasant Park in search of the caller.
McKinnon said information from the caller and cell towers gave searchers a 500 m radius and that they had “searched far beyond that” by Sunday afternoon.
“One can only hope if a person really was injured, they made their way home and they weren’t injured seriously enough to seek attention,” he said.
