CALGARY – Booking a campsite online is always a risk – but what if the promises of clean facilities and a quiet spot to pitch a tent turn out to be broken showers and late-night parties keeping you awake?
An online site called Natrivia.com is trying to help you search for that perfect Alberta campsite–with photos and reviews of 450 campground listings across the province.
You can also discover new sites by entering locations in the search area. Natrivia provides a map and list of campgrounds in that area, as well as opportunities to view activities, amenities and price.
“You can then filter this list of campgrounds based on certain amenities that you want or a specific price point,” said Calgarian co-creator Matt Elliott in a past interview on Global News. “So all this sort of adds up to helping people find their perfect campground in Alberta.”
Elliott’s partner, Wade Jacques, said the site offers an alternative to relying on the same campground year after year, or only relying on suggestions from friends.
“Too many times we went camping and we tried to find the campground that suited us right, and we’d go to many places and it just wasn’t exactly what we were hoping for or it was a little different when we got there,” said Jacques. “We thought, there’s got to be a better way to do this; there’s got to be a better way to represent this.”
The pair said it took a lot of time to gather the data for the hundreds of camping sites–Natrivia.com launched in April. They plan to create an app next, as well as a similar site for hiking routes.
