RPS investigating child fight video

REGINA – Reaction is strong, with some people having trouble even watching it.

A video making the rounds on social media shows a fight between two young boys in what appears to be a Regina back alley.

Beyond the fight, there’s a person shouting encouragement. Global News couldn’t confirm if it’s the voice of a teen or adult, but it’s definitely someone much older than the kids.

“Cheering two little kids in a fight, I’d never do that,” said Al Zajac when he saw the video.

Lee McLeod turned away when the fight became more violent, but says if a family member is behind the camera, “All of us have to take responsibility for correcting that situation.”

“In my head, that’s child abuse,” said Leslie Weiss.

Saed Moazzam, a father of a seven-month old, said the video is particularily disturbing because someone older is setting the stage – even offering to hold one boy’s sweater during the fight.

“It’s not a random incident someone is capturing,” Moazzam said. “Somebody probably planned it this way.”

Investigation underway

The video has caught the eye of the Regina Police Service, according to spokesperson Leslie Parker, who wouldn’t say if the two kids or anyone off-camera has been identified.

“The primary focus is the well-being of the two children,” Parker said. “We want to make sure everything is okay for them.”

The RPS Family Services Unit is handling the investigation.

If the people in the video are identified, Parker said officers may decide education is a better path for the families rather than laying charges.
